Purple Check Mark Project

What is the Purple Check Mark Project?

We created the Purple Check Mark Project in June 2023 in order to fill the gap/do the work for the Queer Muslim community seeking mental health care from providers that are Muslim and LGBTQ affirming.  This project seeks to address the unique needs of folx with intersectional identities who are struggling to find a mental health provider who can validate and honor both their identity as a Muslim and as a member of the LBGTQ community. Too often, we hear stories from queer Muslims that they must hide their identity because they are Muslim.  This is not acceptable to us. As such, we created a vetting process that includes an application, thorough assessment of a candidate's credentials, background, experience working with and serving the queer community.

We hope to bring more Muslim identified mental health providers to YOU so that you can make an informed decision about your mental health care and feel seen and affirmed as you navigate any of life's difficulties.

The Endorsement Includes

Frequently Asked Questions

Can non-Muslim allies apply for the endorsement?

At the moment, our application for endorsement is only open to individuals who identify as Muslim and not yet open to allies. As the project continues and the database grows, we do hope to open it up to allies and we will be certain to inform interested individuals when it happens.

Is the endorsement open to individuals from all over the world?

Yes, we welcome individuals from all over the world to apply for the endorsement as long as they are licensed and registered in their home country and they can provide proof of this registratation.

What is the vision for the future of this project?

In the short term, it is our hope that the Purple Check Mark Project will serve as a source of relief for Queer Muslims who are looking to find a Muslim therapist that is affirming of their queer identity. In the long term, we hope to develop a diverse platform that allows Queer Muslims to access the help and resources they need while also contributing to the professional development of Queer and Queer affirming Muslim therapists.

Can I apply for this project if I haven’t yet received my license?

You are eligible to apply for the endorsement if you are still in your supervision phase however you must be under the supervision of a licensed mental health professional. We ask that you provide your supervisor’s license and share your supervisor’s contact information so we can confirm their role in your supervision.

Do you offer CEs (continuing education) credits?

At this time, we do not have the resources or the capacity to develop a course that would enable individuals to obtain CEs through MPV but we hope to offer this opportunity in the future.

Do you have training available to help us be more affirming as therapists?

Due to limited funding, we have not been able to develop a program that would train individuals in their work with Queer Muslims. We are in the process of identifying grants and developing grant applications so in the near future we can provide this training to you. If you know of available funding for the development of a resource like this or would like to support the development of this resource, you are encouraged to email us at info@mpvusa.org

Is there a cost associated with the application?

Although there is no set fee associated with the application, we do encourage you to make a donation to Muslims for Progressive Values' Purple Check Mark Project to ensure the professional managing the vetting process can be properly compensated.

Please Note:

If you are in a psychiatric crisis or you think you may have an emergency, please call your doctor or visit the nearest emergency room and seek assistance immediately.
