Symposium on Freedom of Religion or Beliefs, Cultural Rights and Women: Promoting a Gendered Perspective on Freedom of Thought, Conscience, and Religion.

Muslims for Progressive Values, the Special Rapporteurs on Freedom of Religion or Belief and in the field of Cultural Rights, and the Alliance of Inclusive Muslims are proud to present this event. 

Come hear an A-list panel of speakers, including

  • Mr. Ahmad Shaheed, UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief

  • Ms. Karima Bennoune, UN Special Rapporteur in the Field of Cultural Rights

  • H.E. Walid Doudech, Permanent Representative of Tunisia to the UN office in Geneva. 

  • H.E. Fernanda San Marin, Member of Parliament, Bolivia

  • Rafida Bonya Ahmed, Bangladesh, USA.

The objectives of the Symposium are: 

  1. Showcasing first-person accounts of how forms of fundamentalism are weaponized against women and girls;

  2. Analyzing interplay between cultural, religious, and nationalistic narratives and purported patriarchal, and misogynistic gender roles;

  3. Promoting sound theological frameworks for gender equality and the empowerment of women;

  4. Normalizing a gender-equitable interpretation of FoRB obligations.
